On May 15 participants in the Society’s Adopt-a-Cemetery Program gathered at the five abandoned cemeteries in our community—Kipptown, Simonstown, Gilpin, Hazelton and Wolfe Cemeteries—to clean up the winter debris so they will be ready for mowing prior to Memorial Day weekend. Under the leadership of Ruth Altemier, the Society has been caring for these historic sites since 2004. In addition to GDHS volunteers, she is assisted in her mission by students from Wallenpaupack High School and members of the local Girl Scout troop.
On April 22 a hardy band of GDHS volunteers picked up trash along a stretch of Rt. 507 in Greentown. This section of highway between Creamery and Brink Hill Roads was adopted by the Historical Society more than 12 years ago, and each spring and fall about a dozen Society members and friends participate in the effort. The group typically collects more than a dozen large bags of trash each time. The event is part of PennDOT’s Clean Up Pennsylvania Program.
