Join us for a day of celebrating local history and honoring the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps at Promised Land State Park. Admission is free! Masker Museum will be open with artifacts not normally on display to the visiting public, and demonstrations will be performed at the Blacksmith Shop using antique tools. The event includes living history tours, music, exhibits, and lectures at the Pavilion. The Greene-Dreher Historical Society will participate with a display that highlights park history and the local men who worked there from its beginning in the early 1900s.
The Civilian Conservation Corps was created by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt at the height of the Great Depression to provide jobs and skills training for the young men who enrolled in the program, and to reclaim the vast tracts of land decimated by the clear cutting of forests in the 1800s and early 1900s. The “CCC Boys” built many of the trails and structures at Promised Land that are still in use, and they planted thousands of trees to make the park the beautiful recreation destination we enjoy today. CCC Day honors these young workers and the role they played in creating this and other state parks across Pennsylvania.
Cake and coffee will be offered at no charge throughout the day, and hot food will be available for purchase.
