Bob Wood shared his extensive knowledge and samples of glass canning and fruit jars. His collection is the result of many years of literally digging his way through the past. His jar “hobby” started with his excavation of farm refuse buried many years ago and resulted in an extensive collection and a wealth of knowledge gained about the history of these jars.
Ball mason jars were first produced in 1885, but the majority of jars in circulation today are post-1930. Even though we use the term mason jars for all glass canning jars, there have been numerous manufacturers, lid designs, and patents. Bob was able to share the evolution of these jars–even with local connections to the industry.
We would like to thank Bob for his interesting presentation and sharing some of the best of his collection with an appreciative audience. Bob Wood is a charter member of the Equinunk Historical Society in Wayne County and served as the group’s first president.
