The Historical Society is hosting a bus trip on Tuesday, June 24, to two historic sites in New York’s Hudson River Valley: The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
With scenic views of the Hudson River, award-winning student-run restaurants, and a campus rich in history (as well as food!), the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park is a foodie destination like no other in the Hudson Valley. We will go behind the scenes of CIA to get an inside look into their world of food, and participate in an interactive demonstration to explore the science of taste. Roth Hall, the home of the former St. Andrew-on-Hudson Jesuit Seminary, will be the setting for our dining experience. A 3-course lunch will be prepared and served by culinary students who are honing their skills.
In the afternoon, we will have a guided bus tour of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the nation’s first military academy. Established in 1802 by President Thomas Jefferson to train officers for the nation’s rapidly expanding army, it continues to uphold its mission of educating, training, and inspiring cadets to become leaders of character, prepared to serve their country with honor and distinction. Over 80,000 men and women have been commissioned at the Academy in its 223-year history.
Since 1843, the West Point Museum has collected, preserved, exhibited, and interpreted historically significant artifacts related to the Military Academy and the U.S. Army. The museum features more than 60,000 Army historical artifacts displayed at Pershing Center and throughout the Academy’s buildings and grounds. Included in the visit will a walking tour of West Point Cemetery, the nation’s oldest military post cemetery established in 1817. Within its gates are memorials to some of America’s most storied military leaders and historic figures interspersed among the graves of soldiers and family members.
The all-inclusive cost for the trip is $140.00 for Historical Society members and $150 for non-members. Reservations must be made not later than June 10 and are nonrefundable after that date. Contact Bernadine Lennon at 570-857-0882 or [email protected] for more information about the luncheon menu and to request a reservation form.
