Edward Parsons (1926–2014) was an astute observer of rural life in what he called “our hilly, rocky portion of Pike County.” After his retirement as a high school science teacher, Ed wrote a series of essays that reflect on a life rich in work, family, and the influence of grandparents. He recalls growing up on his grandparents’ dairy farm in Greene Township during the Depression, serving in the Army during World War II, and returning home to begin a career and raise a family. With titles like “Ax Handles,” “Chicken Tracks,” and “They Made House Calls,” forty essays describe the ways of a simpler time with insight, humor, and an eye to the future. 2015. Edited by Diane Smith. 152 pages, with more than 50 historic b&w photographs, 6″×9″, softcover. $14.15 (PA residents add 6% sales tax.)
